BOURBON

Is there a more satisfying way to end a meal than with a nice glass of brown liquor? No, there’s not. Seriously. I enjoy chocolate as much as the next person, but if I have to choose, it’s bourbon for dessert every time. Full disclosure: I'm not one to save room for dessert. But even if I did, bourbon is just too damn good.

There’s a bit of a misnomer that being vegan precludes one from enjoying alcohol. Let me take a moment to set the record straight. I often elicit perplexed reactions when I order a beer or a glass of bourbon, as though I should be consuming nothing but kale smoothies. “I thought you were a vegan,” is a common refrain, to which I’m forced to explain that wheat, corn, barley, hops, grapes are all vegan! Of course they are. Everyone knows that. It’s just the lifestyle so often associated with veganism is one of health and wellness that frowns on drinking. There may be some truth to that, but there’s also me and many more like me who enjoy a drink now and again. Bourbon, scotch, tequila, wine, beer, sake, etc. - I don't frown on a one of them. They're all uniquely delicious flavors that should be considered part of the vegan palate. Apologies if this slipped into diatribe territory. Bottom line: buy a vegan a drink.
